Choosing the sink is personal. One who has worked with different sized sinks for many years would know what kind of sink is best for them. There are pro and cons of single-bowl and double bowl sinks. Mostly single bowl sinks are installed than the double bowl.
A single bowl sink with the dimension of about 28-30 inches long are common ones which gives enough room to do two things in the same sink at once. A commercially made single bowl sink could be 33 inches long while the double bowl sink can be 48 inches. Both of these would have up a lot of space in the kitchen, also depends on the space in counter top.
Choosing the sink with a budget in the mind is the right option. In the process of remodel, the sink cost is far from the biggest slice.
Anyone who cooks prefer a sink which larger than having a smaller one. An undersized sink quickly gets crowded and cluttered with utensils and becomes difficult to wash larger pots, pans and woks. Extra space is always better for both preparations of food and clean up. But in the larger sinks, spray head or gooseneck faucet should be installed which can be used to flush food particles toward the drain. Extras such as integrated drain boards will take more space. It is best to reserve some counter space on either side of the sink for stacking unwashed dishes and cleaned items.
Installation method of sinks:
Kitchen sinks are installed in the following three ways:
- A drop in sink – A drop in the sink fits into the cutout in the counter top, with rim resting on the counter.
- An under mount sink – An under mount sink is installed under the counter top.
- An apron-front sink – An apron front sink is usually longer and deeper, and is installed in such as way that the front or the apron is exposed for a cottage look.
When the old sink is replaced without making any changes to counter top, we need to make sure the cut out will accommodate the new sink. If the cabinet allows, the size of the sink can be increased from the cutout. But it is difficult to install a smaller sink in the old cut out.
When the counter space is relatively minimal, it is best to go with the smaller sink. It is not recommended to skimp on the size if at all possible. If a small kitchen does not have enough space for a dishwasher, a roomy sink is important for hand-washing. It is best to be ‘clean as you go’ in a small kitchen.
Some ingenuity may be required to create more counter space such as integrated cutting board over the sink. Also, a separate bar sink is a great idea when there are two people actively working in the kitchen. Installing a second sink in a different location place will incur more charges for plumbing fees.
