Choosing a carpet for kids is not tough task. However, we need to consider few a things before selecting one. As a parent, you need to choose kid friendly and comfortable carpet. Children often spill foods or liquids on carpet, so you need to choose a carpet which is strain resistant and durable.
Below are a few points that will help you choose a carpet that’s right for your kid’s room.
Choosing right fiber
You should choose right fiber for carpet carefully as you know kids are soft and sensitive. You should look for a fiber which is easy to clean and is strain resistant.
Carpets are available mainly in four fiber types. They are Wool, Nylon, PET (Polyester) and Triexta. Each fiber has its own pros and cons, let’s know about them.
- Wool: Wool is popular for carpets as it is hard wearing. Wool is also great insulator, but it is hard to clean.
- Nylon: Nylon is the best fiber for kids as it has very a good stain resistant and is durable. A few nylon fiber carpets are eco friendly as they are made with recycled contents. Nylon is easy to clean compared to wool.
- PET (Polyester): Polyester is budget friendly and water resistant. Most of the recycled carpets are made with PET fiber. But this fiber is not durable compared to others.
- Triexta: Triexta fiber carpet is soft and more resistant to strains. This kind of fiber is excellent choice for kid’s room. Just like Nylon, it is durable with high quality. Moreover, Triexta fiber costs less than Nylon fiber.
Cut Pile or Loop Pile Style
Next important point for choosing a right carpet is style. Carpets are available mainly in two different styles – Cut pile or Loop pile. Let me explain you about them in detail.
Cut pile carpets are more tender and soft and make kids feel comfy while playing or sitting on these carpets. While selecting the cut pile carpet you need to look for twist. The tighter the twist is, the more durable it will be.
These carpets are mostly made by Nylon, Polyester or Wool (with Nylon piles). But these carpets show tracking marks and tend to develop pile reversal over a period of time.
Loop piles are not tender like Cut pile. These are mostly used in halls or in offices. Even for loop pile you need to check twist and make sure it’s tighter. Loop pile carpets mostly come in wool fiber.
Loop pile carpets are hard wearing than cut pile carpets. These carpets show very less tracking marks and are less likely to develop reversal. But, kids might not feel comfortable due to its rough texture.
Choosing right color
As I said earlier, kids spill food, juices or ketchup on carpet and you don’t want that dirt mark to be visible. So the best colors for covering dirt are dark colors or dark shades of any color. Dark colors help you in covering the mud or dust. You can also choose carpet color according to your wall color or furniture.
So, choose the carpet for your kid’s room based on above points and vacuum it regularly.
