Carpets are warm on the feet during winter and soft for legs during summer when we walk on it barefoot. Carpet is of course a long term purchase. The maintenance of the carpet is difficult with just cleaning with the vacuum cleaner.
Let us check simple hacks to clean the carpets:
- Baking soda is one of the life savers for many cleaning issues.
- To remove the oil stains from the carpet, use baking soda. Apply baking soda liberally on the stain area and leave it until the baking soda absorbs the stain and gets dried. Vacuum the dried crust and this would leave a much lighter stain. If not vacuuming, dabbing the stain area after the baking soda dries is also effective way.
- Accidents by pets leave smell and discoloration on the carpet. The urine stains on the carpet can be cleaned using baking soda, which absorbs the smell and allows the blot away the rest of mess.
- Baking soda can also be used to freshen up the carpet. A mixture made using essential oil and baking soda can be sprinkled on the carpet and then vacuum after 5-10 minutes to freshen up the carpet.
- To remove the crud, crumbs and hairs from the carpet, use a lint roller. The long hairs and other smaller stubborn particles can be easily cleaned using the lint roller.
- Use vacuum cleaner to get rid of the hard particles. Then treat the spots with a mixture of water and vinegar in a ratio 3:1 for five minutes. Place a towel on the top of the stained area and apply a heated iron. The pressure and heat helps to transfer the stain to towel easily.
- Instead of rubbing the dirt on the carpet, use cleaning solution to blot and wash the stain away from the stain by applying pressure on the spot leading the liquid to be absorbed into the cloth and sponge.
- Blotting inwards from outside the stain ensures the stain does not spread further.
- Make organic healthy cleaner by using ingredients easily available at home. ¾ cup of Hydrogen Peroxide, ¼ cup white vinegar, 5 drops of essential oils, 2 tablespoons dish soap, 2 tablespoons of fabric softener and 1 gallon of hot water. This solution can be used to deep clean the carpet easily.
- To remove the nail polish from the carpet, use rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is not strong enough to bleach the carpet. Once the nail polish is dried, chip off the dried nail polish using blunt tool and then gently dab with a cloth or paper towel until the nail polish dissolves and is absorbed into the cloth.
- Dust accumulation or accidents can be removed using shaving cream. Rub the shaving cream on the dirt, let it sit for some time and then clean it as usual. The carpet will feel soft to touch and more fluffy.
